from my experience, breathing exercises work wonders , trust me. breath in deeply for 4 counts, hold for 7 counts, and exhale slowly, counting backwards from 8. repeat until you feel a little bit less stressed out.
the next thing i usually do is try to distract myself. anything; whether it’s playing an instrument, writing something in a journal, petting an animal, listening to nature sounds, drawing your surroundings, going outside and just breathing the air. anything relaxing that will sort of slow your thoughts down for a little while. usually that’s enough for me to chill out a little and start to form rational thoughts.
